General Information

Each year the Texas Classical Association awards five scholarships; three of its own and two for the Texas State Junior Classical League. The scholarship committee, consisting of  Dr. Melissa Dowling (Southern Methodist University, mdowling@mail.smu.edu), and Dr. Andrew Riggsby (University of Texas at Austin, ariggsby@utxvms.cc.utexas.edu), invites all interested student-teachers, teachers, and professors to apply for the TCA scholarships, and seniors to apply for the TSJCL scholarship.

WE NEED MORE APPLICANTS! Spread the word that these scholarships exist.

TCA Professional Scholarship

All teachers and professors are greatly encouraged to apply for the $500 TCA Professional Scholarship. This scholarship is intended to support projects undertaken by members of the association who have at least two years of full-time classroom teaching experience in classical languages or cultures.

The project may involve attendance at a course, foreign travel (preferably with some specific goals), the creation of materials, or any other worthwhile activity connected with the teaching of classical languages or cultures. Stress is placed on the contribution of the project to the applicant's future skills as a classics teacher.

The applicant must have been an active TCA member for at least two years. The scholarship must be used within one calendar year from receipt. In addition, a report of the recipient's activities or project will be made at the next TCA fall meeting following the completion. Recipients will be eligible to reapply after five years.

TCA Gareth Morgan
Student Teacher Scholarships

College seniors enrolled in a Latin certification program in Texas are encouraged to apply for one of two $250 TCA Gareth Morgan Student Teacher Scholarships. Undergraduate advisors should inform all student teachers of this scholarship.

Applicants must be student teaching in Latin and must be maintaining a 3.00 GPA in Latin or classics with a 2.85 GPA overall.

The monies received will be used during the semester the recipient is student teaching.

TSJCL Lourania Miller and
Gareth Morgan Scholarships

Two $1000 scholarships named for Lourania Miller and Gareth Morgan are awarded annually by the TSJCL to qualified high school seniors who are planning to continue their study of Latin and the classics while in college.

Students who receive this scholarship must take Latin or Greek their freshman year at college. Enrollment in Latin cannot be at a beginning level. Courses in classical civilization will not be accepted.

The TSJCL will only award one scholarship per chapter (i.e., school) each year. This ruling includes recipients of the Belle Gould Scholarship (high score on the Decathlon). Therefore, if one of your students has received the Belle Gould Scholarship, you cannot recommend another of your students for the Miller or Morgan Scholarship. Likewise, you cannot recommend more than one student from your school.
